Vernie Magdalene Tate Stone

Vernie Tate Stone, 76, entered into the gates of Heaven on Saturday, November 19, 2022 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Bowman officiating.  She will be laid to rest beside her best friend, the love of her life, Tommy Stone, Sr at Evergreen   Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 22nd at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and other times at the home.

Mrs. Stone was born on Saturday, January 5, 1946, to the late Aubrey Raymond Tate and Lillian Mae Paschal Tate.  She was the youngest of seven children.  She married the love of her life, Tommy Stone Sr., on Friday, October 6, 1961.  They celebrated 50 years together in 2011. Tommy went to be with his Heavenly Father two months later.  Together they had four children whom they raised in church and taught to love the Lord.  She was a member of New Heights Baptist Church since 1996.

Vernie spent most of her life as a homemaker.  She wanted to be home with her children in the summers and when they got home from school.  She drove a school bus for two years after her youngest child started school and also worked in the sewing industry.  She loved working for Direct Link delivering medications to pharmacies for about five years. Everything she did was to be able to spend most of her time with her family.  The best job she ever had was taking care of her grandchildren that she enjoyed spoiling and then sending home to their parents.  The joys of her life started over again with great grandchildren.  It was evident with her great grandson, Jonah when he would tell everyone, “I love Grandma” from the time he could talk.  Vernie was a God-fearing wife, mama, grandma and loved her family more than her own life.  She told everyone about Jesus and how she wanted to meet them in Heaven.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kathy Gwin and husband, Marty, Darlene Stone, Tammy Farmer and husband, Jay; grandchildren, Tonya Pate and husband, Brad, Debra Brown and husband, Kelly, Taryn Rigney and husband, Wayne, Matthew Stone and wife, Tori, Jayce Farmer, bonus granddaughter, Ashley Cline; great grandchildren, Jonah and Cheyenne Rigney, Tevin Cline Jr. and Jeremiah Blackwell; sisters-in-law, Juanita Tate, Ann Tate, Lois Vernon and Louise Billingsley; along with numerous nephews and nieces; and faithful canine companion of 11 years, Wishbone.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Stone, Sr., her only son, Tommy Stone, Jr, daughter-in-law, Cathy Apple Stone; brothers, Felton, Clyde, Grady, Wade and Larry Tate; sister, Sadie Zimmerman.

The family would like to thank Authoracare Hospice of Greensboro and her  Doctor Junell Koberlein, MD.
