Reidsville – Sherman Franklin Hoggard, 103, of 725 Crescent Drive, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Annie Penn Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Bill Duke and Rev. Dave Huggins officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 AM one hour prior to the service. Mr. Hoggard was a native of Bertie County, NC and was the son of the late William David and Allie   Hoggard. He retired as an Assistant Superintendent at the American Tobacco Company. Mr. Hoggard was a star baseball player and played on scholarship at Oak Ridge Military Academy. Later, he played for the Reidsville Luckies Baseball team. The first night he was given the opportunity to play, the coach said that he would give Sherman the chance to pinch hit, and he had 2 homeruns in his first game. Mr. Hoggard was also an avid golfer. He was a former 2 time Pennrose Country Club champion and had 3 holes in one to his credit. Steve Williams, a staff writer for the Reidsville Review, honored Mr. Hoggard with a wonderful article celebrating his 100th birthday and he ended the article with Sherman’s own words, “You can make a lot of friends playing golf,” he said. “I’ve always tried to treat my fellow man the way I wanted him to treat me. I never had any enemies that I know of and I don’t have any regrets.” Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by some of his sisters and brothers. He is survived by his wife, Mary Coleman Hoggard of the home; daughters, Mary Anne Courts of Gainesville, FL and Pat House and husband, George of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer, Daniel, Patrick and Tammy; 2 great grandchildren; 2 half brothers; 1 half sister and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2531 Flat Rock Road, Reidsville, NC 27320. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wilkersonfuneral.com
