Robert "Bud" Grove Johnson, Jr.

Robert (BUD) Johnson, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 4, 2026 at his home in Pelham following a brief illness.

Bud worked at Dan River Mills for over 40 years. He was a special person to many, not only his family, everyone else always came first in his life. He was our rock, our Poppa Bud, the fixer of everything be it broken cars, tractors, lawnmowers, toys, it didn't matter, "Poppa can fix it" was everyone's motto. He was the keeper of the family farm "Chapman Bottom". He was the babysitter, repair man, listener to all of our problems, garbage man, mailman, gardener, lawn care man, taxi service for grandkids, the best cook ever and he loved to travel reaching 41 States and numerous National Parks. Our family is forever changed.

He is survived by his daughter, Tonya Johnson Wingate; sons, Robert G. Johnson III (Jennifer) and Philip A. Johnson (Kathy); grandchildren, Patrick Johnson (Ashley), Dylan Wingate (Audrey), McKinsey Johnson (Carlos), Andrew “Drew” Wingate (Brynn), Dacota Johnson, Chloie Johnson, and Skyler Johnson; his special great-granddaughters, Jordan Johnson and Elaina Wingate; sister-in-law and caretaker, Audrey Morrison; special nieces, Yvonne McKinney and Stacey Grimsley; numerous nieces and nephews; and his grandson’s friend, who was like a grandson, Josh Rhodes, along with Josh’s children, Easton, Owen, and Lorelai.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Robert G. Johnson, Sr. and Vera Mae Stokes Johnson, a very special and loving sister, Barbara (Bobbi) Renn and a brother, John Johnson and former wife Betty Jo Johnson.

Services will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 at 2 PM at Lively Stones Baptist Church in Pelham with Pastor Larry Durham officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Stones Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home.
