Richard Earl Carden entered into his heavenly home on May 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Wilkerson Funeral Home, with Reverend Ralph Clayton and Reverend David Surrett officiating. Burial will follow at Reidlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Born on September 10, 1950, in Durham, North Carolina, Richard was the son of the late Rev. Robert and Maebelle Carden. Raised in a pastor’s home, he was grounded in faith from an early age—a foundation that would shape the way he lived, loved, and served others throughout his life. As a young man, he found joy in hunting, fishing, playing baseball and football, and especially in Gospel music, which remained close to his heart.
Richard grew up working on the family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and a natural ability to fix just about anything. He began his career as an auditor with Seven-Eleven before later working at Wysong in Greensboro, North Carolina. At just 17 years old, Richard met the love of his life, Debra Paschal, during a revival meeting at his father’s church. From that moment on, their lives were intertwined in a beautiful testimony of love and faith, sharing 57 years of marriage together.
He later worked as an Overhaul Adjuster for American Tobacco Company in Reidsville until its closure. In 1994, he stepped out in faith and determination to start his own business, Carden’s Grading and Hauling—a venture he faithfully built and carried on for the rest of his life.
Even with a lifetime marked by hard work, Richard never lost sight of what mattered most. He devoted himself fully to his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He made it a priority to be present—at every ballgame, every school function, every play, every concert. He didn’t just attend; he showed up with pride, encouragement, and steady support. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He adored them deeply and would often set work aside without hesitation just to spend time with them, creating moments and memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.
Richard’s love and loyalty extended beyond his immediate family into the ministry and music that meant so much to them. He was a constant and faithful supporter of his son Ricky and the work of the Down East Boys. Whether it was driving the bus, working on the bus, fixing sound equipment, or simply being a steady voice and confidant behind the scenes, Richard was always there. He didn’t seek recognition—he simply served, believing in the mission and in his son.
Through every season of life, Richard was known as a man of quiet strength, integrity, and deep faith. He was dependable, humble, and generous with his time and talents. His life was not one lived for attention, but one lived with purpose—honoring God, loving his family, and helping others along the way.
He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Robert Carden; his mother, Maebelle Carden; and his sister, Francis Robinson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Debra Carden; his son, Ricky Carden and wife Shelia; his daughter, Chrystal Wagner and husband Bobby; and his cherished grandchildren, Mallory Carden, Hannah Carden, Ella Wagner, and Ethan Wagner.
Though he will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing that Richard’s faith has become sight, and that he has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the lives he touched, and the quiet, faithful example he set each day.
