Listen to Obituary

Ollis "Eddie" Green, a devoted family man, respected veteran, and powerful force for community development, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2025, at the age of 91, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. A lifelong resident of Reidsville, NC, Eddie leaves behind a legacy defined by tireless service, humble faith, and unwavering dedication to his family and his community.

Born on August 8, 1934, Eddie was the beloved only child of George Burton Green and Lula Mae Wheeler Green. He attended Reidsville Public Schools, graduating from Reidsville Senior High School. He then pursued higher education at North Carolina State University, earning a degree in Civil Engineering. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco.

Upon returning home, Eddie married his sweetheart, Georgie Anna Leggett Green, from Raleigh, NC, on July 12, 1959. Their bond was extraordinary; they shared a remarkable life together for 72 years, celebrating 66 years of marriage. Following his marriage, Eddie joined his father in business, co-owning and operating G.B. Green and Son Ready Mixed Concrete, Inc., where he was a pillar of the local construction and business community for decades. In 1991, Eddie sold the family business to Chandler Concrete, where he continued to work until his retirement in 2003, thoroughly enjoying his time and the relationships he built there.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Eddie’s commitment to service was vast and deeply felt across Reidsville and the Carolinas. Professionally, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Carolina’s Ready Mix Concrete Association, serving as its President for two years. He also dedicated 34 years to the Board of Directors of First National Bank, including six years as its Chairman.

His civic and community involvement included ten years on the Annie Penn Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, where he served as President for two years. He served on the Board of Directors for Piedmont Associated Industries (serving as Chairman for two years), the Board of the Salvation Army, and was an active member of the Citizens Economic Development, INC. Committee of 100 for 13 years, serving as Chairman for two years. Eddie was fortunate to work as a member of the Executive Committee for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s Greater Reidsville Crusade for Christ in 1970. The Greater Reidsville Habitat for Humanity was another cause that he actively participated in and served as the President for several years.

A man of deep faith, Eddie was an active member of Grace Fellowship Church at South Park (formerly First Congregational Christian Church) his entire life. He served as both Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and was a dedicated member of the Men's Fellowship. Demonstrating his humble servant heart, he was known affectionately as the official pot washer for the Men’s Brunswick Stew Sale.

Family

Eddie’s memory will be forever cherished by his beloved wife, Georgie Anna Leggett Green; their four children: son Edward Green and his wife Nancy; daughters Georgie Kuster and her husband John; Katherine Layne and her husband Kevin; and Heather Whitehead and her husband Jacob.

He was a proud and loving "Papa" to seven grandchildren: Jonathan Kuster, Katelyn Kuster, Nathaniel Kuster, Andrew Layne, Philip Layne, Kristen Wilson, and Joshua Wilson and two bonus grandchildren, Aiden Whitehead and Nathan Whitehead.

Eddie is survived by his wife's nieces and their husbands, Julia Hamilton Clarke and Keith Clarke, Mary Gaston Mashburn and Steve St. Angelo, and Melissa Mashburn and Thomas Beal.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, George Burton Green and Lula Mae Wheeler Green; his in-laws, Roy Gray Leggett and Georgie Johnson Leggett; and his sisters-in-law and their husbands, Irma Leggett Hamilton and John Hamilton and Mary Leggett Mashburn and Wayne Mashburn.
