Norma Maynard

Mrs. Norma Maynard passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

A funeral service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 6:00 PM, with visitation to follow the service. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence of Bob and Norma. A private family burial will be held on Friday.

Norma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and faithful friend whose kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of many. She was deeply loved by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bob Maynard; her cherished daughter, Jennifer Bayes and husband Marvin; her sister, Carolyn Hudgins; and her beloved grandchildren, Megan Bayes, Katelyn Sutton and fiancé Phil, and Rebecca Sutton and Jesús. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, who brought great joy to her life. In addition, she leaves behind a special aunt, Eula, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Elwanda Braswell; her father, Bill Garaventa; her brothers, Ken Garaventa and Pete Garaventa; and her special uncle, Tom Vance.

Norma was a woman of education and service. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Appalachian State University and her Master of Science degree from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She devoted several years of her life to shaping young minds as a math teacher with the Rockingham County Schools, where she was respected and appreciated by both students and colleagues.

As long as her health allowed, Norma was an active and faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and shared her strong faith and compassionate heart with others.

In her free time, Norma found joy in reading, playing golf, and gardening. She especially loved sharing the vegetables from her garden with neighbors and friends, a simple reflection of her generous and caring nature.

Norma will be remembered for her faith, her love for family, her dedication to education, and the quiet kindness she extended to everyone around her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockingham Community College Foundation or the Rockingham County Animal Shelter.
