Melvin Harding Cox, Jr., 81, of Lexington, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2026, at Forsyth Medical Center.

A private graveside service will be held at Lebanon Baptist Church.

Melvin was born in Guilford County to the late Melvin Harding Cox, Sr. and Bessie Shelton Cox. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Melvin dedicated over 35 years of service to the Forsyth County School System, where he worked in maintenance.

Following his retirement, he traveled extensively across the United States with the love of his life, Doris Sattenfield. Together, they especially enjoyed visiting casinos along the way. Melvin was also an avid baseball fan and faithfully followed the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Anthony Cox; brothers, Thomas Sweaney Cox, John Billy Cox, Richard “Dickie” Wayne Cox, Jesse David Cox, and Curtis Moricle Cox; and by his life partner, Doris Sattenfield.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Hearn; his brother, Donald Carson Cox and wife, Cindy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
