Max McCollum, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Mt. Bethel Church in Summerfield with Pastor Olaf van de Klashorst officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service, beginning at 1:00PM and other times at his home in Summerfield.
Max was born on October 10, 1943, to the late Kenon and Mildred McCollum in Rockingham County. Max graduated from Bethany High School in 1962. He worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 25 years as a yard master before starting his own landscaping business, Mac’s Lawn Service which he did for over 25 years. Max loved serving his community through his church and landscaping business. He enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends as well as making pieces of furniture and black powder rifles in his workshop. Max also loved his custom built chevy van that he built from the inside out. He was also very involved with Mt. Bethel Church and served as a member of the board. Max loved working with the children in Awana’s and going on youth missions trips. More than anything, he loved his family and sharing his time and wisdom with others and sitting on the couch with his favorite dog, Sally.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Shelton McCollum; brothers, Ronald McCollum and Billy McCollum; nephew, Michael Edmund McCollum; niece, Amy McCollum.
Max is survived by his sons, Russell Max McCollum and wife Beverly, Eric Dwayne McCollum; grandchildren, James Russell McCollum, Joshua Lee McCollum and wife Candace; great-grandchildren, Luke Hunter McCollum and Waylon Matthew McCollum; brother, William Edmund McCollum and wife, Barbara Ann; nieces and nephews, Jennifer McCollum Lilly, Thomas Ovrby McCollum, Tim Ivy McCollum, Jeffrey McCollum, Brad McCollum and wife Ashly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society of North Carolina, 9 Oak Branch Dr, Greensboro, NC 27407.
