Mary Bright Goodwin Vernon

Mary Bright Goodwin Vernon, born December 12, 1946, went to her heavenly home on October 22, 2025.

Mary retired from the American Tobacco Company in 1995. It was there that she met the love of her life, John. They were happily married for nearly 41 years. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, antiquing, and spending time at the beach. She loved her family fiercely, of which there was never a doubt. Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend. She was known as “Chick” to her siblings and “Sweetie Pie” to her husband, but her greatest title of all was “Mammaw.” 

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Huey and Ruby Goodwin, her son Randall Barham, her brothers Edward “Geter” Goodwin and Henry “Chee” Goodwin, and her sisters Rena Hinkle and Jane Courts. 

Left to remember Mary are her husband, John Vernon, her daughter Tammy Douglas and son-in-law Brian, stepdaughter Angie Gonzalez (George), brother Jamie Goodwin, sister Pam Robertson, granddaughters Miranda Anderson (David), Lacy Bratton, Brendall King (James), and great-grandchildren Brelynn Bright Pruitt, Maisyn Anderson, Casen King, and Collins King. Of course, we can’t forget her most faithful companion, Lucy. 

Mary’s family will have a celebration of life on Saturday, November 1, 2025, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at 3090 Ashley Loop Road, Reidsville, NC 27320. 

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you tell those closest to you that you love them, hug them a little tighter, and don’t take for granted the time that you have, for it will be gone all too soon.
