Mary Eugenia “Genie” Harrington, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor John Shields officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at 3:00 PM at the Harrington Family Cemetery located at 167 Jaycee Park Loop Taylorsville, NC 28681.
Genie was born in Charlotte, NC to the late Josiah Withers Doar and Ruth Ward Doar. She was raised in Greensboro and graduated from Grimsley High School and then received her bachelor’s degree from UNC Greensboro in Mathematics. She worked in human resources for many years with Gilbarco and then NGK Ceramics in Mooresville- where they made their home for the last 26 years until their most recent move to Reidsville, NC. Her mother was an opera singer, which began her love for music. As a music lover, she played the violin and always sang in the church choir. She was a longtime member of Peninsula Baptist Church in Mooresville. Genie loved walking, it was part of her daily routine! She loved the beach and was the best nanny in the world to her grandchildren. Her one and only great grandson has brought her special joy these last years. Genie spent many vacations at Smith Mountain Lake and Emerald Isle. She was known for her gentle nature, generosity and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Diane Adcock.
She is survived by her husband of almost 38 years, Charlie Harrington; sons, Sion Harrington (Aimee) and Jody Harrington (Melody); daughter, Jamie Rettie (Ken); Grandchildren, Jordan Clay (Samantha), Delaney Harrington, Luke Rettie and Heather Rettie; great grandson, Grayson Clay; brother, David Doar (Marjorie); Neice, Kira Doar (Tim); nephew, Keith Doar and great niece, Layla Shovers as well as a large and loving group of extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to The Center for Adult Development and Aging Fund at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine PO Box 016960, Miami, FL 33101.
