Marie Allen French Setliff, age 93, of Reidsville, passed away on December 5, 2025. She was born May 2, 1932, in Rockingham County to Albert Jackson and Velma Woodall Allen. Marie was a devoted wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who found joy in making her home a happy and loving place for her family.
She graduated as class secretary from Ruffin High School in 1949 and worked for 25 years at Chase Bag Company in Reidsville as a typist and later as a keypunch operator. She was first married to William Richard French, and together they raised two children: Vickie French Meador and William Jackson French. After W.R.’s death in 1994, Marie married Charles Bethel Setliff. She was blessed to be loved by two wonderful husbands and cared for both during their declining health.
Marie was known for her thoughtfulness, regularly sending special handmade cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. She loved shopping, going to yard sales, gardening, cooking, and planning parties and showers for family and friends. She and W.R. enjoyed many trips with Holiday Tours and trips to the beach. They also enjoyed going camping in the mountains. She was a longtime active member of Mt. Carmel Global Methodist Church and also belonged to the Bethlehem Home Demonstration Club.
Marie is survived by her children, Vickie (Bill) Meador and William Jackson (Nancy) French, both of Reidsville; stepchildren, Charles Setliff, Doris Setliff Pruitt, Barry Setliff, and Gail Setliff Stanfield (Larry); sister, Dorothy Allen Early of Reidsville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Joe and Cameron Morris Meador (sons Liam and Noah); Adam and Lisa Meador Bricker (daughter Elizabeth); Colby and Jessie Paschal Meador (daughter Ellie, son Evan); Scott and Ashley French Perkins (daughter Logan, son Jake); Jordan French (sons Levi and Will); Molly Stanfield Green; Katie Stanfield Jernigan; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Virginia French, Paul Barnes, and Jerry Witt. The family sends its thanks to her special caregivers, Emily Anderson and Tim Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands W.R. French and Charles Setliff; brother Jackie Allen; sister Margaret Allen Holliday; and grandson Jonathan Stuart Meador.
Services will be held at Mt. Carmel Global Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 11:00 with Pastor Tim James officiating. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Marie will be laid to rest beside her first husband, William Richard French, in the church cemetery. At other times the family will be at her home. Wilkerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
