Landon Eugene "Gene" Mays

Reidsville: Landon Eugene “Gene” Mays, 67, went home to be with The Lord on Friday, August 30, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Tuck and Rev. Ryan Crowder officiating. The burial will follow at Reidlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, September 2, 2019 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Gene was born in Rockingham County to Betty Paschal Mays and the late Landon Shields “Bob” Mays. He retired from Lorillard Tobacco with over 30 years of service. Gene was knowledgeable in many things and if he didn’t know how to do something, just like his father, he would learn. He loved to fly and hang around with his airport buddies. Most of all, he loved his family. He was there by his daddy’s side during his battle with cancer. He then stepped into the role of caregiver for his mama. After the passing of his brother-in-law, he became the rock his sister needed. Our hearts are broken by his sudden passing, but we have peace knowing he is in heaven with our Daddy. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Bill Norman; paternal grandparents, John and Myrtle Mays as well as his maternal grandparents, Sidney and Erma Paschal In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Phyllis Mays Norman; brother, Michael Mays (Dalphene); nieces, Milicent Mays Hooper (David), Michaela Mays Matolka (Cole); nephew, Ethan Mays; great nephew, Braedyn Hooper; great niece, Avery Hooper and a loving extended family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County at PO Box 281, Wentworth NC 27375. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wilkersonfuneral.com.

God's Gift of Time....we all need a time to grieve and a time for reflection. My life changed upon meeting Gene, as I am assured so many others can state the same. My reflection takes me to the major changing point of my life in the summer of 1973. My life was mapped out for me to attend the University in HI in the fall. Yet, God works in mysterious ways. Visiting Reidsville, I was cruising Scales Street as Gene and Ronnie worked at a gas station. As I passed by, Gene made a small wager with his cousin Ron that he could not get a date with me (Gene missed nothing). Ron left work to follow me. Who won this playful wager? I did! I may have missed going to HI for college but God Blessed me with much more. Thus in the long list of Gene's many talents, achievements & goals reached, I add Matchmaker". Within a few months, I married Ronnie and was the most fortunate girl on earth to move onto the Mays farm to live. Aunt Betty, Uncle Bob and precious Granny Paschal, were like a family to me. A family filled with love, caring and attentive to any needs which meant so much to me being a teenager. How Blessed can a person be? I will never forget Gene's smile, when we asked him to be our son's Godfather upon his birth and we named him in honor of Gene. (Cameron Eugene). Gene's attributes simply amazed me, I was in total awe of him. Our love and respect of this fabulous man never wavered but grew stronger. Gene is in Heaven but I have a new found inspiration to be a better person as my tribute to Gene. May I make Gene proud as he looks down. I vow to try to live each day as Gene would have with God guiding me as I have some huge shoes to fill. Gene your WINGS were Ready but our HEARTS were not. Aunt Betty, Phyllis, Mike & family may God's reassurance of his everlasting love start to heal your broken hearts as you come to term with your tragic loss. Praying for you and wishing you Peace. We are here for you any time Aunt Betty (day or night) Much love, Kendra

We have always been told that the measure of a man is the memories he leaves behind. Cousin Gene will remain in our hearts forever ! The assistance he offered my Mom & Dad, living beside them on the hill, I will never forget. Spending Sunday afternoons with the "Airport Gang" solving the problems of the world. Be it politics, religion, economy or weather "the gang" had it under control, only to be interrupted by running outside to see who was flying over and/or landing. Your chair will always remain empty as no one can fill your seat. We all know you are flying higher with God and family in Heaven. Thanks for the memories, the smile you always shared with us, the way you "whipped out" your cell to solve problems and lastly the knowledge you shared with us. Fly high my friend and cousin! May we always strive to be more like you. Until we meet again cuz! Love Ronnie

Enjoyed working with Gene. How many people own and fly their own airplanes? I admired him and I know others did, too.
