Ken was born to Bessie Cox and George Vaughn, Sr on September 15, 1941 in Reidsville. The third of five children, he graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1963, playing on their first ever soccer team. At Appalachian, he met and soon married his wife of 62 years, Joyce Carver.

The family joined Bethlehem Methodist Church where Ken served in local missions, various committee positions, and as a trustee. In the 1980s, Ken was elected to and served as a member of the Rockingham County School Board. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in their favorite activities. In their retirement, Ken and Joyce have enjoyed traveling by RV to national parks, touring museums, researching family genealogy, and visiting 47 of the 50 states.
