Katernia Ann Dye Flysta, 78, of Madison, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 20, 2026.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Pleasantville Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ralph Clayton officiating. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Katernia was born in Rockingham County to the late Raymond Spencer Dye and Myrtle Webb Dye. She graduated from Bethany High School in 1965 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Education from Guilford College. She dedicated her career to teaching English with Rockingham County Schools until her retirement.
She loved her family deeply and was especially devoted to her grandchildren, faithfully attending soccer and baseball games, dance recitals, and any event that involved them. Katernia had a great love for music—playing the piano, singing in the choir, and listening to live music.
Katernia enjoyed dancing, working in her yard, playing pickleball, and reading a good book. She had a passion for teaching and sharing her knowledge with others. She especially cherished time spent traveling, particularly to Oak Island Beach, where she enjoyed dining at Provisions and walking along the shore.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Metro “Mitch” Flysta.
She is survived by her daughters, Deana Vernon Parsley and husband Steven, and Shannon Vernon Swann and husband Richard; her grandchildren, Dylan Spencer Swann, Tyler O’Quinn Swann, Jett Rylan Parsley, and Wryn Winter Parsley; and special friends, W.A. Wall and Ron Bell, who loved our mother deeply and supported her through every joy and challenge.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Ancora Compassionate Care, especially her nurses, Emily and Stephanie, and chaplain, Hunter Thompson. They also wish to thank her loving caregivers, Sandy Penn, Staci Evans, Kelly Chapman, Debbie Foley, and Marjorie Cross, for their dedicated care and support.
Memorials may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
