Junius Cecil Smith

Junius Cecil Smith (1933-2023) of Caswell County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on January 31st, 2023.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Cecil was a cherished father, grandfather, husband, family member and friend. He was the third child of George Robert Smith, I, and Louise Jones Smith, both of Caswell Co. He has one surviving brother, George Robert Smith II, of Shawsville, Va. His brother William Henry Smith and sister Marjorie Smith Handy, are both deceased. He is survived by his wife, Thyra H. Smith, his two children, Peter Smith (Caswell Co.) and Georgia Smith Seminet (Austin, TX), her husband, Philippe, and their daughters, Chloë and Camille. Cecil was born and raised in Caswell County and loved country life. He spent many a wonderful day golfing with friends and his brothers Bobby and Billy, fishing off the North Carolina coast with his buddies (except the time their boat sank offshore), hunting with friends and his son Peter in Caswell County and Tyrrell County in eastern N.C., where Thyra was born and raised. Cecil was the proprietor of Smith’s General Store along with managing an appliance retail business where he sold and serviced appliances and outdoor equipment at “the Crossroads” in Casville for over 40 years. His various business ventures allowed him to put his business degree from East Carolina University to good use. He was also a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and a 20-year veteran of the Casville Volunteer Fire Department. A chronology of events cannot begin to paint the picture of a life well-lived and all the good times our family spent together with so many dear friends. Despite the sadness of our loss, we will be sustained by a lifetime of memories for which we are tremendously grateful.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 216 Cemetery Road, Ruffin, NC 27326 or Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
