Joyce Smith Poindexter

“Joyce” Burnette Smith Poindexter, a beautiful and loving wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend, passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday, September 16, 2023, after a courageous battle with a heart condition for many years. She was a resident of Reidsville, NC where her husband “Junior” (Hardin W. Poindexter, Jr.) currently resides.

Joyce was born on July 22, 1940, in Wilmington, NC to mother, Lizzie Mae Byrd Smith and father, James Linville Smith (both deceased). Her parents moved from Wilmington, NC around 1945 and purchased a farm on the Wolf Island Road in Rockingham County where Joyce grew up. She attended Ruffin High School, Ruffin, NC. She was happily married to the love of her life, “Junior” (Hardin W. Poindexter, Jr.) of Pelham, NC, for 65 years. They were married on September 16, 1958. Sadly, Joyce passed on the date they celebrated 65 years of marriage. They have one child, Randy Keith Poindexter, born on August 3, 1959, who resides in Reidsville, NC. Joyce was immensely proud of her son who is well known as a talented musician and a master string instrument builder.

Besides spending time with her husband, son and family and their beloved 11-year-old dog, Ben, Joyce loved raising plants and flowers. She had a bright and energetic personality and will be remembered for her keen sense of humor and her love of music and singing. She was proud of her husband who is well known in the bluegrass music industry as founder and leader of the Golden State Boys (band started while they resided in California back in the ‘sixties’). She enjoyed 18 years of employment at Creighton Shirt Company in Reidsville, NC. Junior enjoyed 32 years of employment as Warehouse Foreman for Kahl Specialty Steel Company, Greensboro, NC.

Joyce is survived by husband, Hardin William “Junior” Poindexter, Jr., and son, Randy Keith Poindexter. Siblings:  sister, Arlene Smith Terry (Eugene), and brother, Arnold Wayne Smith (Susan). Deceased siblings:  sister Gladys Smith Seawell (Julius), sister, Elaine Smith Patterson (Mike); brother, James “Alton” Smith (Kathy) and brother, Donald Ray Smith (Joy).
