Joseph Charlie Draper

Joseph C. Draper, a lifelong resident of Rockingham County, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 71. Joe was a man of many talents, boundless curiosity, and an adventurous spirit who found deep joy in the natural world and in the people around him.

Joe’s love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for water sports—he was an avid snorkeler, scuba diver, and white-water rafter. Whether riding the waves or exploring winding country roads on his motorcycle, he embraced life with energy and enthusiasm.

A skilled machinist by trade, Joe had a gift for working with metal, both in precision and artistry. His craftsmanship extended to creative metal sculptures that reflected his appreciation for form and function. In his earlier years, he worked as an airplane mechanic, laying the foundation for a lifelong love of mechanics and hands-on problem solving.

Joe was also a gifted musician who played the dulcimer, piano, and guitar. His music brought peace and joy to those around him. Deeply connected to the land, he loved farming and raising cattle, always finding fulfillment in the rhythms of rural life.

He will be remembered as a loyal friend, a compassionate caregiver, and a steady presence in the lives of those he loved. Joe was a beloved brother, son, and uncle whose kindness and strength touched many.

Joe is survived by his sister, Martha Ontjes; his nephew, Dalton L. Draper; his sister-in-law, Ursula Draper; and many beloved cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Loel Draper; his brother, Wesley Lee Draper; and his brother-in-law, Robert Ontjes.

A graveside service for both Joseph and Loel will be announced at a later date.

Joe leaves behind a legacy of creativity, adventure, generosity, and quiet devotion. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
