John David Lumpkins, Jr. 84, of Ruffin, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Mayfield Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Monday, September 7, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and other times at his home.

Junior was born in Danville, Virginia, to the late John David Lumpkins, Sr. and Lillian East Lumpkins. He was raised in the Ruffin Community and remained there throughout his entire life. Junior was a member of Mayfield Baptist Church and, in recent years, had begun attending Central Baptist Church in Eden.

He retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant in Danville, Virginia. After retirement, he was happiest when he was busy and always found something to keep his hands occupied. Each year, he looked forward to planting and tending his garden, taking great pride in growing his own vegetables and then canning the harvest. His green thumb also extended to the many houseplants he lovingly maintained.

Junior enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He could often be found tinkering in his garage, visiting flea markets, or buying and selling items he found along the way. He enjoyed watching wrestling and, in recent years, took on the adventure of raising chickens. No matter what he was doing, Junior was happiest when he was working on something, learning something new, or simply staying busy.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lumpkins; children, Tangela Doss, Christopher David Lumpkins (Melissa) and Dana Terry; stepdaughters, Jill Roach (David), Amy Carter (Matthew); step son, John Pesce; grandchildren, Devon Lumpkins, Peyton Terry, Damian Moton, Luke Carter and Kara Carter; great grandchild, Mason Morris; niece, Connie Strader; special cousin, Linda Crowder; and his faithful dog, Rosie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his brother, Robert “Skip” Lumpkins; sister, Janet Lumpkins; step son, Robert Pesce; grandchild, Alyssa Wingfield.
