John Henry Shelton

John Henry Shelton, 78, went home to be with The Lord on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Monday, January 11, 2021 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Lattimer officiating. The entombment will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens. John will be available for viewing Sunday afternoon from noon till 5:00 pm and Monday morning prior to the service. The family request that you please remember social distancing and wear a mask.

John was a native of Rockingham County and was the son of the late Henry Lee and Lillie Shelton. He was a beloved daddy to his children, adored Papa to his grandchildren and sweetheart and partner to his fiancé. He enjoyed hunting, farming, and NASCAR. He was an accomplished contractor, well-known both locally and across the Southeast, for his work in construction. He built hundreds of homes and many commercial properties over his career. He was recognized as the “Parade of Homes Builder of the Year” in the early 1980’s. One of his most cherished accomplishments included his work for Camp Carefree. Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother Nuel Shelton and sister Ernestine Carroll.

John is survived by his fiancé Nancy Marchman; children Denise Shelton Carter, Shane Shelton and wife Joanna, Lynn Miller and wife Laura, Chris Miller and wife Erica, and Wayne Miller and wife Allison; grandchildren Evan Carter, Eryn Carter, Kaitlyn Shelton, Josh Shelton, Tyler, Marissa, Erin, Gabriella and Seth Miller and Chance and Kaylee Miller; and a large extended family.
