John Abner Black, III

John Abner Black, III, 83, of Reidsville went home to be with the Lord on September 1, 2026. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

John was born in New Port News, VA to the late John Abner Black, Jr. and Dorothy Louise Williamson Black. He grew up in Canoga Park, California, and attended San Jose State University. He married his childhood sweetheart, and together they raised their family in Jacksonville, Florida. John worked for Deluxe Check Printers for 24 years. For many years, he also served as a Little League softball coach, including having the special opportunity to coach his daughter.

A lifelong baseball fan, John fulfilled a childhood dream after retiring when he went to work for the Los Angeles Dodgers during spring training in Vero Beach, Florida.

John later retired to North Carolina, where he took great pride in caring for his yard and garden. He grew a wonderful variety of fruits and vegetables and enjoyed keeping everything neatly trimmed and well maintained.

Above all, John was a good man who loved his family deeply. He was devoted to his wife and took great pride in his children and the family they built together. His love for them was evident throughout his life, and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and family man.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Tom Dunbar. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Weldon Black; daughter, Janet Dunbar; son, Kenneth Black and wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Ian Dunbar, Diana Turner and husband, Jonathan, Alexander Black and wife, Amanda, Sophia Black, and Trevor Black; and great-grandson, Nolan Turner.
