Gertie Owens Shumate

Gertie Owens Shumate, 87, of Greensboro  passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022 at her home after a lengthy illness. 

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Reidlawn Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Chapmon officiating. 

Gertie was born in Randolph County to the late  Manley and Bertha Jackson Owens.  A tough early life didn’t stop her from being a super wife, mother and grandmother.  Her work ethic was legendary and she never made an excuse.  Gertie began her career as a Beautician at Leon's Beauty School and later retired from Cone Mills, White Oak Plant with 37 years of service. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with friends and shopping. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Elmo Shumate; sisters, Ruby Owens,  Huldie Saunders (her twin) and Faye Luther; brothers, David Walker, Manley and Johnny Owens. 

She is survived by her children, Keith Shumate and wife, Sharon, Kevin Shumate and Kimberly Shumate; grandchildren, Kolby and Kory Shumate; sister, Lois Jarvis.
