George “Thomas” Ross, 96, passed away peacefully at his home on February 27, 2026.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at New Lebanon Church with Dr. Mark Harris and Rev. Jaret McBryde. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home. Rockingham County Honor guard will render honors at New Lebanon Church Cemetery following the service.
He was a lifelong Bethany Community resident and New Lebanon Church member. He graduated from Bethany High School in 1949 and retired from Transco at age 59. The only time Thomas was away from his Bethany home for a significant period was during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was a decorated Korean War Veteran, serving our Country as a Combat Medic receiving a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Thomas enjoyed spending time with his family, especially when good food was involved. He had a passion for golf. While he was able, he could be found on the course at Monroeton or competing and winning Transco Company tournaments. He finished his last round at age 88. In the fall, Thomas could be found at the Outer Banks, fishing with his friends and family. We have been blessed by his ability to fix and repair almost anything. In good weather, Thomas could be found maintaining the farm on his red Honda Four-wheeler, “his legs”, as he would call it.
Along with his parents, John and Lucy Ross, Thomas is preceded in death by his brothers William “Billy” Ross and Doug Ross.
Thomas is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Virgie Wilson Ross; his children Karen Wilkinson (Phillip), Keith Ross (Nancy), Kimberly Moore (Tony), and Kevin Ross; 8 grandchildren: John Wilkinson, Sarah Moore Rupp (Michael), Kristen Wilkinson Mayhew (Justin), Jeremy Moore (Emily), Ryan Wilkinson, Eric Wilkinson (Kristi), Thomas Ross, and Brooklyn Ross, Liam Miles and 6 great-grandchildren Connor and Austin Rupp, Jonah and Savannah Moore, and Mia and Zoey Mayhew. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Jean Myers and Rachel Archer (Jerry) and brothers John Ross, Wilson Ross and Guy Ross (Dell). As well as a large and loving group of extended family and friends.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Ancora Compassionate Care and Caring Hands Home Health as well as all the family and friends who offered support during a difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Ancora Compassionate care at PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or New Lebanon Church Cemetery fund at 521 Huffines Mill Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.
