Frances Talley Lester

Frances Talley Lester, 102, of Reidsville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Reidsville Alliance Church with Pastor Steve Gregory officiating. Burial will follow at Bethany Community Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of her son-in-law, John Somers, in Reidsville. In honor of Frances' wishes and her love for bright colors, the family encourages those attending to wear cheerful, colorful attire if they wish.

Frances was born in Chatham, VA to the late James Frances Talley and Mary Howerton Overton. Frances was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a faithful member of Reidsville Alliance Church, where she served as choir director for many years, leading cantatas, Christmas pageants and singing in the Alliance Quartet. Her love for the Lord and her love for music were evident in the way she faithfully served her church family. She didn't just attend church—she stood out because of her faithful service, her joyful spirit, and the way she invested herself in others.

She retired from Matkins Fabric Shop, but her creativity never retired. Frances had a remarkable gift for sewing, crocheting, painting, drawing, playing the piano, and was an avid shopper. She was largely self-taught and had an incredible ability to look at a dress and create her own pattern from it. She lovingly made prom dresses, wedding gowns, and countless other garments for family and friends, blessing many with the work of her hands. She didn't just make clothes—she made them stand out. She had an eye for taking something ordinary and making it beautiful, a quality that reflected who she was throughout her life. She also enjoyed creating thoughtful gifts for local teachers, always looking for ways to use her talents to bless others.

Frances was opinionated, a little stubborn, and very matter-of-fact. Her family likes to say those qualities are probably part of the reason she lived to be 102 years old. She knew what she thought, wasn't afraid to say it, and possessed a quiet strength that carried her through life's challenges. She also had a wonderful sense of humor, often without even trying. Her matter-of-fact observations and dry wit had a way of making those around her laugh.

She grew up during the Great Depression and came of age during World War II, when those on the home front carried heavy responsibilities of their own. Like so many of her generation, she learned to make do with what she had, live under rationing, and keep things going while others were away. She didn't have much, but she learned to make the most of what she had. Those experiences shaped the resourceful, resilient woman her family came to know and love. That determination and creativity stayed with her throughout her life and were reflected in everything she did—from the clothes she sewed to the home she created and the family she loved so well.

Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She faithfully wrote them letters that made each of them feel loved and important. She treasured spending time with them, whether it was taking them out to eat, browsing antique shops together, or simply enjoying each other's company. Those moments became treasured memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

And if you asked her family about her cooking, one thing would certainly come up—her potato salad. It was a favorite at family gatherings and one of the many simple ways she showed her love. Her family will miss her presence, conversations, laughter, wisdom, and love. The memories she leaves behind will continue to be cherished, and her influence will live on in the lives of those who were blessed to know and love her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Powell Lester, Sr.; her daughter, Pam Somers; her grandson, John Powell Lester III; her son-in-law, Michael C. Stovall III; and her siblings, Dorothy Giordano and Conrad Talley.

She is survived by her son, John Powell Lester, Jr., and his wife, Joyce, of Reidsville; her daughter, Kathy Stovall, of Wilmington, NC; her son-in-law, John Somers, of Reidsville; her grandchildren, Brianna Lester, Marlena Lester, Joseph Somers (Melissa), Heather Bare and her husband, Steve, Patrick Somers (Brooke), Corbett Stovall, and Kit Stovall and fiancé Ashley; her great-grandchildren, Jacob Somers, Kaitlin Somers, Lillie Somers Howell and husband Keegan, Abby Grace Bare Bagent and her husband, Tyler, Victoria Bare, and Kyri Lester; her niece, Judy Whiteside; and her nephew, Billy Giordano.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the caring staffs of Brookdale Senior Living and Penn Nursing Center for the love and compassion shown to Frances. They are also deeply grateful for the many cards, prayers, acts of kindness, and expressions of love and support she received over the years. A special thank you is extended to Faith Billingsley for her unwavering friendship, kindness, and faithful support throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory Frances, Michael and Pam.
