Edward Joseph Cass, 84, of Caswell County, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2025, at ECU Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1401 Rascoe Dameron Road, Burlington, NC 27217, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with Bishop Danny Ouzts officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:00 PM, two hours prior to the service.
Edward proudly served in the United States Army for 23 years, achieving the rank of Green Beret and serving three tours in Vietnam. A jungle expert and a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, he earned numerous honors and awards throughout his distinguished military career, including the Purple Heart and Gold Star. Upon retiring from the Army, he dedicated the next 22 years to teaching ROTC at Morehead High School, where he inspired countless students.
A man of many interests, Edward cherished attending auctions and estate sales with his wife, Susan. He was passionate about raising Basset Hounds and had a deep love for classic cars.
Edward is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Susan Cass; his sons, Eddie Cass, Brian Cass, Joseph Cass, and Edward Cass Jr.; his daughters, Carol Sherman, Gloria Helberg, Jo-Lynn Overby, Tracy Black, and Elizabeth Love‑McDowell; his sisters, Gladys Colapietro and Kathleen Bessette; and his brother, Thomas Cass. He also leaves behind 15 cherished grandchildren, and a large extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Doris Cass, and his infant child, Kelly Irene Cass.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
