Listen to Obituary

Doyle Thomas Dix Sr. passed away at the age of 92. He was born on May 27, 1934, in Caswell County, North Carolina, to Harry and Georgia McKinney Dix. He was the youngest of eight children and grew up loved by his large family.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 27, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Carmel GMC Cemetery, with Pastor Cress Warner officiating.

Doyle graduated from Ruffin High School in Rockingham County, North Carolina, before being drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began working in the warehouse at Binswanger Glass Company in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he resided, and where all of his children were born. After moving to Hickory, North Carolina, Doyle continued his career with Binswanger Glass Company as a salesman. Upon retiring from the company, he returned to the workforce at Catawba Building Supply, where he remained until his final retirement at the age of 71. Throughout his career, Doyle demonstrated a strong work ethic and a commitment to providing for his family.

An avid outdoorsman, Doyle enjoyed fishing and could often be found relaxing on his dock at Lake Hickory, wearing a hat or spending time on the water. He also loved watching birds, and the hummingbird feeder outside his window, which provided hours of enjoyment as he watched the little birds come and go. When he wasn’t enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, Doyle could often be found playing cards. Whether playing solitaire or bridge, joining family game night for Rook or Phase 10, or playing Go Fish with his grandchildren, he was always a very competitive card player who enjoyed a little friendly competition.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Georgia Dix; seven siblings, Virginia, Bessie, Della, Lenora, Carl, Charlie, and Pauline; his first wife, Frances Saunders; and his grandson, Jason Cook.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Frances Ellington Dix; his four children, Karen (Mark) Dillon, Tommy (Jane) Dix, Sandra Dix Cook, and Jeff Dix; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Doyle was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will continue to live on through his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made to Ancora Compassionate Care, formerly Hospice of Rockingham County, at 2150 NC-65 Reidsville, NC 27320.
