Dorothy Letchworth Strader

Dorothy Letchworth Strader, 93, of Reidsville, NC, was called home by her heavenly father on January, 10, 2024 in her sleep. While deeply saddened that she is no longer by their side, the family is rejoicing thinking of the reunion she's sharing with loved ones gone before, and divinely comforted knowing that she's finally face to face with her Lord and Savior.

Dorothy "Dot" was born on July, 26, 1930, to Lucy Susan and Clarence Clifton Letchworth in Greene County, NC. Dot was one of 12 siblings and grew up farming in Eastern North Carolina. She eventually moved to Reidsville, NC to serve as a caretaker for her infant nephew.

During her frequent trips strolling him through the local grocery store, she caught the eye of the butcher counter attendant, James Malcolm Strader who claimed just to have been admiring the baby. James "Mac" and Dot were united in marriage in February 1951, and Reidsville would serve as her home for the remainder of her life. Their loving union brought about two children, Larry Malcolm and Linda Greene.

Dot served her family and community with immeasurable compassion and unwavering faith. Her meticulous attention to detail resulted in a successful career as a bookkeeper at Link Brothers Pharmacy in Reidsville. She also worked at Ruth's, a women's clothing boutique helping patron's to look their best. Dot was a steadfast member of North Scales Street Church of Christ where she regularly served in the nursery.

When not at church or work, Dot could be found up keeping the garden on the family farm. She had a knack for gardening, canning and cooking. Dot was most at rest with a fishing pole in her hand. She found immense joy in taking trips to the couple's Topsail Island vacation home where the catch of the day would be fried and served for dinner that night.

The love she showered her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with will never be forgotten. She had the gift of making the ordinary feel extraordinary to those fortunate enough to call her Grandma Dot. Regular visits to the farm became the most exciting adventures and shell hunts at the beach turned to magical treasure treks. She patiently spent her time pouring herself into each of them. When any of them would say “I love you Grandma”, she would say “I love you the most”. She is now at home with the one who truly loves her the most.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and Clarence Letchworth, her husband, Mac Strader and many brothers and sisters.

Dot is survived by children, Larry (Evelyn) of Oak Ridge, NC, Linda (Tony) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren: Landis Smith (Chris) of Raleigh, NC, Lindsey Hughes (Joseph) of Westfield, IN, and Malcolm Greene of Greensboro, NC; great-grandchildren: Sydney, Ellie, Kylie, Mallory, Roman, Eyler and Elyn; sister: Alma Somers.

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held graveside only at Reidlawn Cemetery on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
