David Cummings Smith, Jr., 70, went home to be with his wife and the Lord on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Ralph Clayton officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00PM and other times at the home of his sister, Diane Turner.
David was born on May 27, 1955, in Reidsville to the late David Sr. and Nellie Ward Smith. He was devoted to his country and community while serving as a United States Navy Veteran, Police Officer, and working for Rockingham County 911 Communications. David loved to play ball, whatever was in season, and was an avid athlete and especially enjoyed his time on the Golf Course. For the last 35 years, David was in charge of coordinating Best Ball at several local golf courses, even though he considered Monroeton Golf Course his home course. David was charismatic, fun loving, and especially cherished his time with his family and friends; often telling stories of their adventures together. One of his favorite experiences was getting the opportunity to fly in the B17 WWII Bomber, “The Yankee Lady”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life for 49 years, Linda Smith; granddaughter, Trinity Smith; and sister, Debbie Smith.
He is survived by his son, Doug Smith and wife Margaret; siblings, Diane Turner and husband, Terry, Susie Taylor and husband Kirk, Jimmy Smith and wife, Melissa; multiple lifelong friends, especially Ken Echols; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter, 250 Cherokee Camp Road Reidsville, NC 27320.
