Christopher Scott “Bird Dog” Burnette, 50, of Reidsville, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The family will celebrate his life with a visitation at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 3:00 -5:00 PM.
Chris was born in Danville, Virginia, to Bronwynn Burnette and the late Bobby Lee Burnette. From a young age, he loved being involved in the Boy Scouts and was especially proud of earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Rockingham County High School, where he was active in baseball, football, and wrestling. Chris continued his education at Appalachian State University, earning his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology, while also playing football for the university.
He was affectionately known as Bird Dog to those who knew and loved him and had a larger than life spirit and heart to match. His smile would light up a room, and his energy made you want to embrace life. People were naturally drawn to his charismatic nature. Bird Dog had a love for all things outdoors and found joy in fishing, hunting, playing golf and arrowhead hunting. He was extremely intelligent with a vast knowledge of history. He enjoyed watching any documentary or show relating to history and could tell you almost anything about war. He loved his dogs and had many throughout his life and most recently his companion, Birdie Boy. His niece Ava was the light of his life. He loved spending time with her, teaching her how to play golf as well as sharing anything relating to history or nature.
Bird Dog was a happy, delightful and entertaining man that loved to cook and share his cooking skills with others. Throughout his life he cherished the time spent with his cousins and would often recall happy memories shared with each one of them. He loved his friends and their company, especially his best friend, Toby. He loved Beastie Boys and Wu-Tang Clan music. As an Appalachian Alumni, he loved to watch his team play, along with other college and pro football teams; checking scores with enthusiasm and comments.
Chris was employed with Procter & Gamble and owner and operator of State Line Landscaping.
Although his life was short his wisdom and his love for his family and friends was everlasting.
