Cecil Vernon Gammon went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 16, 2025, following a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, November 19th, at Church Street Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina with Reverend Tim Huffman officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 AM to 11:30 AM, prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow at 2 PM at Lakeview Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Vernon was born on January 3, 1953, to the late Cecil Daniel Gammon and Dora Pettigrew Gammon Apple.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Myers Gammon of the home; two step-sons, Dustin Harris and wife, Amy of Reidsville and Sterlin Haney of Reidsville; two step-daughters, Casey Harris of Reidsville and Rhonda Haney of Randleman; brother, Kenny Gammon and wife, Linda of Reidsville; sisters, Vivian Smith and husband, Charles of Reidsville and Karen Apple of Reidsville; nine grandchildren, Connor Hudson, Autumn Hudson, TJ Hudson, Brianna Harris, Gage Harris, Brian Harris, Peyton Harris, Ryder Harris and Raylan Harris; along with his great-grandson, Maddox Harris.

Vernon loved the Lord and loved telling people about Jesus. He had a passion for helping at church and at the Fire Department. Vernon never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved his family and the members of the church.

He was a member of Church Street Baptist Church and served as Chairman of the Financial Committee for 13 years.

Vernon became a member of Teamsters Local 391 in 1978 while working for Miller Brewing Company where he served as Shop Steward for 13 years. He also served as a rank-and-file trustee of Local 391 for 7 years, became a Business Agent in 1991 and then was elected as Secretary-Treasurer in 2011. Vernon has represented members at various locations including Clarios, Pipeline workers, United Airlines mechanics, Miller Brewing, Ball Corporation, Tyson Foods and Rockingham County school bus drivers.

He has served in a multitude of positions over the years, to include, Vice President of Teamsters Joint Council 9, Recording Secretary & Trustee to the Brewery & Soft Drink Conference, Representative for International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Washington, DC, Secretary-Treasurer for the Carolina Food & Beverage Council for NC & SC, appointed as a board Member to the Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development for 25 years, appointed by NC Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the Board of Trustees for the NC Teachers & State Employees’ Retirement System in 2017. He was re-appointed by Governor Roy Cooper in 2021.

The NC Senate voted, with a unanimous vote on both sides of the aisle, for his honesty and his experience with the Pension Plan.

In 2022 he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award by NC Governor Roy Cooper. This honor being reserved by NC Governor’s as their highest honor for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service accomplishments. Vernon joins the order as well as such notable North Carolinians as Michael Jordan, Charles Kuralt and Andy Griffith.

In 2022 he was awarded the NC Dogwood Award, by NC Attorney General, Josh Stein, for his extraordinary demonstration of excellence, dedication and creativity in pursuing Department of Justice’s mission of protecting the people of North Carolina.

Vernon has served Reidsville and Rockingham County for more than 47 years as a dedicated firefighter. He served the Reidsville Fire Department for 25 years as a Call Firefighter. He has been a member of the Monroeton Fire Department since 1996. Vernon served as a Secretary to the Board of Directors. He was most recently the Deputy Chief for the Department.

In 2023 he was awarded “The Order of the Guardian” by Commissioner of Insurance, Mike Causey, in recognition of his character, integrity, service and honor.

For the past 25 years, Vernon has served as Vice President to the NC AFL-CIO. He previously served as an Executive Board member of the NC Democratic Party.

He has worked with the NC Cherokee Council of Boy Scouts as an instructor for Labor Merit Badges.

He loved youth football and has been an assistant coach for the past 20 years of Rockingham County Youth Football. Vernon loved playing golf and softball and was a diehard Green Bay Packer fan.

The family would like to offer their deepest gratitude to all the family members, friends and co-workers who have prayed, loved and supported us through this very difficult time.
