Cathy Joann Poindexter Sutton

Cathy Joann Poindexter Sutton, of 2465 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 23, 2025, at Eden Rehabilitation Center in Eden, NC, after a year of declining health. She was 72 years old.

Born on August 13, 1953, Cathy was the daughter of the late James “Edmond” Poindexter and Loleta Massey Poindexter. A lifelong resident of the community, she graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1971. She went on to work for Burlington Industries as a folder for 30 years and later retired from Annie Penn Hospital after serving five years as a dietary aide.

Cathy was a devoted member of Lively Stones Baptist Church, where she came to know the Lord at a young age and remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life.

Known affectionately as the “Snow White” of her neighborhood, Cathy’s love for animals was unmatched. Animals seemed naturally drawn to her gentle spirit, and she lovingly cared for many pets over the years, treating each as though they were her own children.

Although Cathy never had children of her own, she poured her love into her nieces and nephews, who treasured her deeply. She was also an extraordinary homemaker, with a gift for cooking and keeping an immaculate home that was always warm, welcoming, and filled with the aroma of fresh laundry or her latest recipe.

Cathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Sutton; her parents; her brother, Freddy Alan Poindexter; her niece, Lauren Elizabeth Hyler; her brother-in-law, Maynard Keith Hyler Sr.; and her cherished pets, Feefee, Snoopy, Mitzi, and Maddie.

Left to honor her memory are her sister and best friend, Deborah Hyler; nieces, Tracy Hyler and Adina (Kevin) Tompkins; nephew, Maynard “Keith” Hyler Jr. (Sarah); stepson, Clint (Peggy) Sutton; her loyal companion, her pet Dedee; and seven additional nieces and nephews.

Cathy’s life will be remembered for her faith, kindness, devotion to family, and her gentle, giving heart. Her memory will live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know and love her.

Arrangements are being handled by Wilkerson Funeral Home. A service celebrating Cathy’s life will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, with a private family burial to follow at another time. Friends and family are invited to gather and share in honoring her life and legacy.
