Alice Starr Austin

Alice Ann Starr Austin, 85, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, surrounded by her family. Alice will be laid to rest on the family farm, where a private family service will be held at a later date.

Alice was born in Guilford County to the late Roy Starr and Martha Combs Starr. She loved flower gardening and helping her husband manage their farm for many years, but most of all she loved and treasured her entire family.

She was deeply devoted to her beloved lab Tucker, who was her loyal companion and brought comfort to her days. She pampered him every day and he stayed faithfully by her side through every moment. He was her true love.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Thomas Ray Austin; siblings, Joe Starr and Jean Starr Whitesell.

Alice is survived by her children, Tammy Austin Gregory and husband, Jerry and “Tommy” Ray Austin Jr. and wife, Penny ; grandchildren, Niki Hodges Torres and husband, Stephen, Ashley Conger and husband, Lewis, and Carrington Austin; great-grandchildren, Austin and Walker Conger, Thea and Mac Torres; siblings, Rudy Starr, Peggy Starr Newsome and husband, PeeWee, and Percy Starr and wife, Debbie; special friends, Thyra Smith and Gloria Roberts as well as a large and loving group of extended family and friends.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Josseline Cooper and Alicia Parker of the Cone Palliative Care Team and to the angelic Sylvia Martin with Cone Health.
