Alfred Lee Hearp, Jr.

Alfred Lee Hearp, Jr, 71 of Reidsville NC passed away Friday, July 7, 2023.

Alfred was born the eldest of three children to Alfred Lee Hearp, Sr and Peggy Hearp on May 3, 1952. Shortly after graduating from Reidsville Senior High School in 1970, he started working at American Tobacco Company/Commonwealth Brands, starting as a floor cleaner and retiring as the Head Electrical Engineer Supervisor after a 42 year career.

Alfred met the love of his life Carolyn Deniece Gwynn in August of 1969. They married on November  20th 1971, surrounded by friends and family. In 1973, Alfred and Carolyn had their first child , Melanie. In 1975, they welcomed their twin boys Matthew and Mark. He worked extremely hard to make sure they were taken care of and felt loved every day.  

Alfred wore many titles: husband, dad, brother, son, friend, “Dude” but the title that he loved the most was Poppie to his grandchildren. Poppie loved spending time with them and was often seen on the sidelines of football games, soccer games, wrestling matches, the waiting room of dance practices, dance recitals and theater performances. He attended Cornerstone Community Church. 

Alfred was preceded in death by his dad Alfred Lee Hearp Sr. , his mother Peggy Eastridge Hearp, his brother Douglas Ray Hearp and his brother-in-law Timothy Gwynn. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn Gwynn Hearp, his children Melanie Hearp Morrison (John) of Reidsville, NC, Dr. Matthew Lee Hearp (Cathy) of Blacksburg, VA, Mark Lee Hearp (Mine) of Fayetteville, NC. His sister Gena Hearp Bryant (Wayne) of Greensboro, NC. His brother-in-law Howard Burton Gwynn, Jr (Donna) of Danville, VA. He will be missed dearly by his five precious grandchildren Brenna, Maddie, Morgan, Marlowe, and Ruby. 

A celebration of Alfred’s life will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Phillip Surrett officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Reidsville, NC.

The family would like to thank Dr. Najeeb Rehman for his years of wonderful care, Dr. Dylan Suttle for taking a chance on a procedure at the end of Alfred’s life and for Gibson Hospice House for making his last days comfortable.
