Gerald Wayne "Jeff" Jeffers

Gerald Wayne Jeffers, 92, of Reidsville, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 at Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. Mr. Jeffers was born in Woodhull, IL and was the son of the late Amos Jeffers and Nina Jeffers Grider (Fred). “Jeff,” as his friends called him, graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944. World War II was then at its height, and he enlisted in the US Navy. After attending many Naval schools, he eventually served on the SS476 and SS484, two of the latest class submarines in the US fleet. He and his family relocated to North Carolina in 1951 where he later became the plant superintendent at Transcontinental Gas Pipeline. Jeff formed some of his closest friendships during his 31 years at TransCo, and enjoyed breakfast outings with many of these men for decades after his retirement. He made many contributions to his local community including being a charter member of the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department and being an active member of the Reidsville Rotary Club and VFW Outpost. Jeff was a huge fan of fast cars and fish tales, and cherished his annual fishing trips to Cape Hatteras with his son Richard and their fishing buddies. He never missed an opportunity to brag on his children and grandchildren, and doted on his growing brood of great-grandchildren. Most recently, he resided at Carolina Estates where he quickly made many new friends and looked forward to poker and bingo games. Jeff was a faithful member of Lamb’s Chapel in Burlington and will be fondly remembered by his small-group community there. Along with his parents, Jeff was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Carol Stach Jeffers, and son, Stephen Carl Jeffers. Survivors include his son, Richard Jeffers (Donna) of Gibsonville; daughter, Sharon Loftis (Dennis) of Reidsville; grandchildren, Amber Register (Mike), Ashley Vogrinc (Dave), USMC Retired Major Chris Loftis (Phaedra), Heather Wallace (Matthew); fifteen great-grandchildren; and siblings, Kenneth Jeffers (Mary), Verdene Jackson (Lester), and Barbara Specht (Jim). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Lamb’s Chapel outreach program, Living Free Ministries of Alamance County, 1230 Walnut Grove Lane, Snow Camp, NC 27349. Wilkerson Funeral Home is assisting the family and condolences may be sent to www.wilkersonfuneral.com.
