Julius Cornwell Thompson

Julius “Dink” Cornwall Thompson, 95, passed away peacefully at Penn Nursing Center on February 2, 2017. He was born on April 10, 1921 in Caswell County, to the late Joseph Hilton Thompson and Jennie Bell Nunn Thompson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 2 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of his niece, Myra Moore at 642 Miller Chapel Road. A private interment will be held at 12:00 PM at Evergreen Memory Gardens. Julius cherished his tobacco heritage, from his youth on the family farm to his career as an employee of the “Cigarette Factory”. As a retired employee of American Tobacco Company, Julius took great pride in his work and considered his 38 years of service as an honor and a privilege.
Julius loved telling childhood stories about hunting with slingshots, rearing pet possums, riding mules, discovering stills and singing in the church choir. As an avid sportsman, he took great pleasure in spinning fishing and hunting tales, especially those that involved his beloved bird dogs. As a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church, he provided hands-on service for numerous projects. Losing his sight in his latter years, one of his greatest pleasures was listening to his collection of gospel bluegrass music. Along with his parents, Julius was preceded in death by his loyal wife of 72 years, Audrey Hearp Thompson; three brothers: Jack, Ralph and Joseph Nunn and four sisters: Jessie Thompson, Aurelia Thompson, Anna Gunn and Jennie Bell McKinney.
Survivors include a large number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express profound gratitude to the Penn Nursing Center staff for their attentive care. In addition, we would like to thank his devoted friends, the Gene & Mary Apple family for the love and unselfish support they have provided over the years. Wilkerson Funeral Home is serving the family and online condolences may be offered at www.wilkersonfuneral.com
